Staying at Mandarin Oriental Tokyo. Calm, Central, and Perfect for Couples

Some hotels win you over with drama. Others do it quietly, through balance, consistency, and an almost unfair level of comfort. Mandarin Oriental Tokyo belongs firmly in the second category, and that is precisely why we keep coming back.

A location that works without trying too hard

The hotel sits in the Nihonbashi Mitsui Tower, right in the historic Nihonbashi district. For couples, this location is close to perfect. It is central without being hectic, refined without being stiff, and peaceful in a way that is increasingly rare in Tokyo.

From Tokyo Station, the hotel is easily walkable, and we genuinely recommend doing the walk at least once. It is a pleasant stroll that lets you ease into the city, taking in the changing scenery as Nihonbashi gently transitions toward more commercial areas. On rainy days or when luggage is involved, the underground via Mitsukoshimae Station or a short taxi ride makes life easy.

Shopping, dining, and Ginza within reach

One of the understated strengths of this hotel is what surrounds it. Right next door is Mitsukoshi Nihonbashi, a department store that feels calm and spacious compared to its Ginza counterpart. A little further down the road, heading toward Ginza, is Takashimaya Nihonbashi, which has gone through a major renovation in recent years and is absolutely worth a visit.

If you want the buzz of Ginza, it is close enough to walk, but even easier to reach by hopping on the subway for two short stops.

Directly opposite the hotel is a small, charming mall that many visitors walk past without noticing. Do not make that mistake. Inside is an excellent izakaya called "Nihonbashi Sumi-no-e Sansha" or 日本橋 墨之栄 山茶 that has become one of our regular dinner spots whenever we stay at Mandarin Oriental Tokyo. It is popular, lively, and consistently good, so reservations are highly recommended. We have eaten there many times across many stays, and it has never disappointed.

Before you even reach your room

Like many Tokyo luxury hotels, Mandarin Oriental Tokyo occupies the upper floors of a tall building. On the ground floor, before heading up or after checking in, it is worth stopping by the Mandarin Oriental shop. It is a great place to browse, and their signature teas make for excellent souvenirs.

In the very same building, and impossible to miss, is Sembikiya. This is, without exaggeration, our favourite place to buy jam to bring home. We usually stock up before leaving Japan. The strawberry jam in particular deserves special mention, it is easily the best strawberry jam we have ever had.

Breakfast that sets the tone for the day

Breakfast at Mandarin Oriental Tokyo is a must. The buffet is generous, well thought out, and paired with panoramic views over the city (sometimes we even see Fuji-san). Try to arrive a little earlier so you can secure a window seat. It makes a real difference.

One item that should not be missed at breakfast is the onsen egg. It may sound simple, but it is outstanding. Perfectly cooked, silky, and deeply comforting, it is one of those small details that elevates the entire breakfast experience. We make a point of having it every time, and it remains one of our favourite morning rituals at the hotel.

Because we are frequent visitors, the staff remember us, and on our last morning we are often surprised with something special, usually a beautifully prepared fruit plate featuring exceptionally good seasonal fruit. It is a small gesture, but one that says a lot about how this hotel treats returning guests.

Rooms designed for real rest

The rooms at Mandarin Oriental Tokyo are excellent across the board. We have stayed in many different room categories, facing different directions, and have yet to find one we did not enjoy. If you are trying to keep costs sensible, there is no real need to splurge on the top-tier rooms, the standard rooms already deliver the full experience.

The bed deserves special praise. It is firm, supportive, and genuinely comfortable. In a city where many luxury hotels opt for extremely soft mattresses, Mandarin Oriental gets the balance right. Rest comes easily here.

And if anything in your room is not quite right, do not hesitate to contact the front desk. The staff are proactive and helpful, and issues are typically resolved quickly, often with a room change or an upgrade.

Why we keep coming back

Mandarin Oriental Tokyo does not shout for attention. It earns loyalty through calm confidence, excellent service, and a location that quietly connects you to the best of the city. For couples looking for a refined, relaxed base in Tokyo, it remains one of our strongest recommendations, and one we are always happy to return to.
